Want to scare a man? Mention shopping for an engagement ring or shopping in general. Obviously, this is in jest however there is an element of truth as I have yet to see anything else elicit more anxiety than a few grams of gold and a diamond. We work with a lot of men purchasing engagement rings; they all have the same symptoms; excitement, anxiety and joy. Our goal is to ensure that every customer leaves here happy in love with their purchase no matter if its a birthday gift, engagement ring or anniversary gift for their wife. In each instance we strive to educate our customers on the finer points of purchasing jewelry.
Some of the tips we give customers:
1. This is an exciting time! Enjoy it! We suggest; do a little reconnaissance; do your research and set a budget for your purchase. We recommend setting a high and low amount to use as your guideline. This way when you’re looking at engagement ring, you have a base line to keep in mind. And speaking of rings….

The bottom line, having an idea of the style of ring will help you simplify your search. And then we come to the center stone…..
3. What kind of diamond or gemstone would you like to place in your ring? Do you want a round brilliant cut diamond, a cushion cut, a princess cut diamond or do you want a semi-precious gemstone? A diamond is the standard for an engagement ring but its not the absolute. The tradition of a diamond engagement ring actually has its roots in the late 18th century with Maximilian presenting his bride Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring as a wedding gift. This essentially 
started the tradition of a diamond engagement ring. And be certain you have done the research on the 4C’s of diamonds. However, if a diamond isn’t in the budget then consider a gemstone.
4. So, if you go the gemstone route, then which one? We suggest doing something meaningful to both of you; for example, her birth stone or yours or the month in which you met or had your first date. Remember, an engagement ring is one of the single most important pieces of jewelry you’ll ever purchase; be certain that you are 100% satisfied so we recommend asking questions.
5. Remember to ask questions – don’t be shy. As the old adage goes; if something seems to good to be true then it probably is. So, while your asking questions take notes and even do some comparison shopping. 6. And what about choices of metals? One has a wide variety of choices of metals for engagement rings; platinum and 18K white gold has long been the standard for engagement rings. This can also add to the cost of the ring as platinum is more expensive that 18K white gold. Other metals to consider, 14K gold or palladium. There are pluses and minuses to each metal be certain that you understand each.
7. Commitment rings vs. an engagement ring; a commitment ring is similiar to a promise ring. Just as engagement rings can take a variety of shapes, styles and sizes so can promise rings. In short, you could select just about anything for a commitment ring. The only item could be an eternity ring, a claddagh ring or even a completely lovely black diamond fashion ring.

It’s a time honored tradition – buying an engagement ring. Many come to us bewildered by all the choices. It is for this reason, we recommnend doing your homework – this will save you time and money in the long run. Below are a few tips to keep in mind while you’re shopping and what you can expect from us at Alexa Rose Fine Jewelry.
One – Get to know your perfect diamond.
Before you go shopping for your diamond engagement ring be certain to have done some research. Begin by researching the 4 C’s (Cut, Clarity, Color and Carat) and start to understand how this will affect the final price. This will help you to develop your budget for your diamond engagement ring.
Each one of the 4 C’s lends something special to your diamond for your engagement ring be certain to have a basic understanding before beginning your search. When you’re sitting with your sales consultant, remember, ask questions and have them clarify anything you do not completely understand.

While this system is great sometimes, you may not jive with the person with whom you’ve been referred. So, this is another great reason to shop and compare prices. This gives you an opportunity to discuss with other sales consultants and find what best for you. In the end make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company, the last thing you would want is to have the person from whom you’re purchased your engagement ring to up and disappear. Even if you have to pay a little more, in the long run its usually worth it.
Three – Time to Upgrade?
During down turns in the market, larger diamonds (those defined as 2.0ct or greater) usually experience higher levels of inventory. As a result the larger stones typically drop in price, so if you’ve been waiting to upgrade; this could be the best time for you to upgrade and receive a great price.
Four – Deal with a reputable company.
I mentioned this earlier but, double check the firm with the BBB, etc. Ensure that they’re a reputable company. Just like your mechanic, you need to be certain that you’re dealing with someone who has a good track record and who is honest. Check with the Jewelers Board of Trade as this firm rates jewelers according to several different factors. Also, checking with the local BBB is another great way to check on a business and its reputation.
Be certain to also check the company’s return, exchange policy and upgrade policy, this could affect you later so be certain that you have a complete understanding before you buy.
Five – Look for jewelers who extend credit or offer payment terms.
This dove tails with item four. Most reputable jewelers will have financing options available for customers. In today’s market, some jewelers are starting to offer layaway options for clients as well.

Getting engaged is an exciting time! And if you’re like most – you start looking around and the first thing you get? Sticker Shock! We recommend before you go to purchase a diamond, to start with your budget do some research and have a rough idea of the size or carat weight, the color and the clarity of the diamond. This will help simplify the process for you a bit. One additional note about the Cut. Normally, the Cut for most is the shape of the stone. While this is true its not the whole story. The Cut of the diamond has more to do with the brilliance of the diamond. While we do not have the space or the time to get into the all the intricacies at the present moment, we can give a short description. The Cut allows light to refract or bend inside of the diamond so it really shows the brilliance of the diamond. If the Cut is too deep or too swallow the light will either escape or become trapped and not let the brilliance of the diamond shine.
An additional consideration is whether or not the diamond is certified. A certified diamond acts like an insurance policy. Its a form of protection or buyers insurance for you. This guarantees that the diamond has been reviewed by an expert to determine its rating. This certificate will should something ever happen to your diamond engagement ring or you decide to upgrade will make your process easier. This is another item to consider when purchasing a diamond certified vs. uncertified. We prefer to only sell certified diamonds but from time to time if a customer is well informed we will sell an uncertified diamond.

Men’s diamond stud earrings, I know this sounds a bit off the wall but, stop and think about it for a moment. A diamond stud earring (the classic diamond stud earring) is perfect for a man, woman or child. Recently, I was enjoying dinner with friends and as it often does, the topic of my industry came up.
One of the gentleman at the table wanted to know if men purchased jewelry for themselves. The short answer, Yes. Your wedding day, a day that most women have been dreaming about since they were small children. I, on the other hand, well, let’s just say I think that I am not truly from Venus but rather from Mars. I never dreamt of my wedding day or even my engagement ring nor did I play with Barbies as a child. I was too busy outside, playing ball, climbing trees and being an all around tom-boy. In fact, my Barbies slept for months on end and then ended up missing.
Ah, I know, this begets the question, how on earth did I end up in the jewelry business? A business that is driven by love and the white dress; in short the whole enchilada. Well, the vote is still out how I ended up in this business but the consensus, I fell into it. Well, if I have to count my blessings and I do, I am grateful that we are not the typical jewelry store. We’re for the most part wholesale to the public and this translates to our to diamonds, finished jewelery or even gemstone jewelry. While we may be wholesale to the public we do not have that wholesale feel, our environment is comfortable and inviting. The economy is still taking center stage and everyone has become very cost conscious. The phrase ‘if you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it,’ has fallen out of favor. However, I tend to take the position that the American consumer has always been extremely savvy and conscious of the quality of items purchased. In our current economic conditionconsumers are even more price sensative. This is extraordinarily true with any big ticket purchase – i.e. an enagement ring, anniversary band or other piece of fine jewelry.
So, how do you know you’re getting a good deal? This may seem obvious but start with research. Look at styles, prices and quality of items presented. While I may sound like a broken record, this really will help you in the long run. This will not only make your shopping experience easier but it will also help guide you and the sales person helping you.
Some other points to consider, choice of metals. Engagement rings like all jewelry come in many different shapes, sizes and styles. Platinum has long been a favorite for an engagement rings and bridal sets. Historically, platinum has been much more expensive that gold. However, in today’s market 18KW gold and platinum are almost on par with reguard to cost. If cost is a major factor, consider a 14K gold setting as this will lower your cost; not substantially, but any reduction is always a great help. It doesn’t hurt to have a ring quoted for you in 18K and 14K. This will allow you to make an informed decision.

Another idea, recycle a family diamond, the half pair of diamond studs you’re hanging on too or the pendant that you never wear. You’ll be amazed at how wonderful your diamond will look in a new setting. Remember you can use men’s jewlry too! This offers several advantages, one, there should be some cost savings (a smaller setting – less gold and potentially less carat weight), two, most firms will not require full payment upfront rather just a deposit to order the ring (which does give you a little bit of time to pay for it) and three, you will have a unique piece of jewelry. Remember that ordering a ring will take some time so, a little patience will be required. If you do choose to go this route be sure to check what the retailers policy is for custom orders, make sure you understand th fine print and factor all of these items into your decision.
I know I’ve spoken about this previously, but make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company. More stable firms will offer consumer friendly services and will not be driven merely by commission. Check for additional services such as cleanings, repairs and even additional insurance services. These are all factors to be considered when purchasing your engagement ring.

If you’ve been reading the paper, watching television or even your in-box you’ve seen and heard, ‘Sell your diamond and gold jewelry for a profit!’ And I’m sure that many have noticed that these commercials are on the rise. I’m sure the one question that runs through everyone’s mind; how do you know that you’re getting the right price, a good deal, etc. Well, it can be tough to tell.
Retail prices for diamonds and for gold jewelry like most commodities rise and fall based on market demand and availability. In most cases, large stones will appreciate but only those that are deemed extraordinarily rare or are in short supply. The bottom line? Buy jewelry for sentimental reasons not as an investment. If your intention is to invest in diamonds, seek out professional assistance and make sure you read all the fine print.
Below are a few tips to consider when purchasing or should you choose to sell your diamond engagement ring or diamond jewelry.
